Helmets

Derby is fun, but concussions are not!

Any helmet rated for multiple impacts, such as skateboard or hockey helmets, will suffice. Single impact helmets, including bicycle helmets, are not derby-safe.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has more information regarding impact ratings and concussion prevention here.

Elbow, Wrist, and Knee Pads

You will fall playing derby, but a good set of pads will help you bounce back.

There are many options out there in all different price ranges. Most important is your pads will protect you. We have loaner pads to get you started while you decide what you want to buy!

Mouth Guards

We love your winning smile the way it is!

Both low profile and traditional style mouth guards are suitable for derby, so it’ll will come down to your personal preference on fit and style. Please reach out to your dentist if you have specific concerns.

“Let’s get some shoes.”

~ “Shoes” (Sullivan 2006)

Quad skates are required for roller derby. Being a full contact sport, a skater needs the stability of quad skates to take the hits given during a derby bout. For first time skaters with the Blockheads, we have rental skates available from Western Skateland when you come to your first practice on Wednesdays.
